Experiences & Adventures

We've all read the research that shows that time spent in nature exponentially boosts our mental health and wellbeing. Our hectic modern lives require us to sit for hours and hours in front of screens, our body forgotten as our mind takes over, and physical space gives way to virtual space. Reconnecting with the earth, giving our bodies what they need is essential to finding a sustainable balance in the modern day world. Outdoor adventures provide that balance, setting our bodies in motion, disconnecting from the Tamed World and reconnecting with self through the Wild World.

“Nature is not a place to visit, It is home.”

Reconnecting with Community is one of my Pillars of Connection and is why I love to offer group experiences and adventures that have a little more focus on 'Adventure Therapy'.

So what is Adventure Therapy?

'Adventure' or 'Bush' Therapy is a diverse field of practice combining adventure and outdoor environments with the intention to achieve therapeutic outcomes for those involved. It's often used to describe a regular, structured activity that:

  • is led by trained professionals who are there to support you

  • provides the opportunity for ongoing reflection which enhances personal growth and progress

  • takes place in a green environment

  • encourages individuals to receive positive therapeutic benefits from the process because they are motivated to participate in it

  • is both meaningful and real to the participants because it reflects their real life

Adventure Therapy activities are designed to be therapeutic in nature. They may focus on fostering communication and cooperation, building trust in self and others, or developing and improving problem-solving skills.

Adventure therapy can be fun, exciting, and challenging. It’s a great way to learn and practice new behaviours, improve your interpersonal skills, face your fears, overcome personal obstacles and challenges, and heal painful emotions.

If you’re interested in adventure therapy for yourself or a loved one, or if traditional therapy hasn’t really worked, I encourage you to reach out and we can chat to help you determine if it’s a good fit for your needs and goals.

Adventure Therapy: an introduction

This short video introduces the main ideas behind adventure therapy, and explains how using adventure based activities in the outdoors can improve mental wellbeing:

What happens in Adventure Therapy?

Adventure therapy can take place in both rural and urban settings, including parks, gardens, farms and woodlands. Something very important to consider is that Adventure is not necessarily abseiling, rock climbing & skydiving, but rather Adventure should be seen as an activity that takes you completely outside of your comfort zone. I offer a range of micro adventures with a slightly lower risk level. They involve varying amounts of physical activity, depending on the type of programme. It can include activities that focus on:

  • Participants taking part in engaging, real-world experiences

  • Providing opportunities for personal development

Adventure Therapy is effective at encouraging an improved understanding of risks and consequences; a more optimistic outlook; and a greater willingness to confront challenges and step outside one’s comfort zone.
